GRAND FORKS – Snow flew for the first time this season in northeast North Dakota and northern Minnesota.
Thursday, Grand Forks saw some light flurries, but nothing that stuck on the ground. That wasn’t necessarily the case, though, in places like Greenbush, Minnesota.
“We do have some snow to track for you this morning,” WDAY meteorologist Lydia Blume said during the station’s morning broadcast, shortly after 5 a.m. Friday.
Blume showed live video from Wahpeton, where snow was steadily falling. Also shown were photos from viewers in northern Minnesota, including Greenbush, Salol and Gatzke, all of which showed grass covered with snow. Another photo broadcast on WDAY showed a decent covering of snow on a deck in Thief River Falls.
“It’s not heavy – it’s kind of pretty,” Blume said. “We’re not seeing too much for accumulation … but some of that snow is sticking to those colder surfaces.”

Grand Forks did not have accumulated snow as morning broke Friday, but light rain and flurries were falling after 5 a.m. The temperature in Grand Forks before sunrise Friday was 36. The high was expected to be around 43.
"The snow is falling from air that is much colder, way up above our heads, that is below freezing and working its way down," Blume said. "Even though your air temperature is above freezing down on the ground, you can still get some of that snow."
Blume predicts another band of snow will work its way out of Canada and into northern Minnesota early Saturday.
According to the WDAY, Saturday’s high temperature in Grand Forks will be around 50, while Sunday will be around 41. It will be breezy both days. Throughout next week, look for daytime highs of 45 on Monday, 49 on Tuesday and 59 on Wednesday.
And here's some good news for those who hope to delay winter for a while: Temperatures likely will be in the 60s next weekend.
