FARGO — During the course of any winter, there is one day with the coldest temperature of that entire winter season. Most winters, that period of weather is impactful because it is around the limit of what our systems are designed to handle. Home furnaces, working harder than usual, are more likely to break down. Some cars fail to start.
Since the record began in 1881, the average coldest daily low temperature of the season in Fargo-Moorhead and Grand Forks has been -29 degrees. For both cities, the average coldest daily high has been -13 degrees. Over the past three complete decades, 1991-2020, the average coldest low has been -25 degrees for Fargo and -26 degrees for Grand Forks while the average coldest high has been -10 for Fargo and -11 for Grand Forks. Of course, an average means it has been lower half the years and higher half the years.
