SANDSTONE, Minn. -- Hundreds of climbers from across the country attended the 14th annual Sandstone Ice Fest, Jan. 4-6 at Robinson Park. Some were there to learn the basics, others to advance their skills and some just to connect or reconnect with like-minded enthusiasts. But everyone was there to have fun.
Introduction to ice fishing Tettegouche State Park will host a free ice fishing orientation on Lax Lake. Participants will target panfish and pike, and all equipment, bait and hot beverages will be provided by the park. The DNR advises attendees to dress for the weather and bring their own water, snacks and fishing licenses. Ice conditions might be safe for driving, but participants should plan to park at the boat landing and walk the short distance to the fishing area. EAST BETHEL, Minn. -- Eyes on the Wild is a camera-trap project at the Cedar Creek Ecosystem Science Reserve approximately 30 miles north of the University of Minnesota campus in Minneapolis. A network of 120 trail cameras was deployed in in 2017 across the site’s 5,400 acres. So far, the cameras have captured almost 1 million images of animals, including whitetail deer, coyotes and the bison herd that roamed part of Cedar Creek last summer.
The traditional trout season in the Driftless area of southeastern Minnesota and western Wisconsin opened in mid-April and ran through mid to late September. In recent years, though, natural resource agencies in both states have created catch-and-release seasons during winter to expand angling opportunities across the region.
