MINOT, N.D. -- The idea that President Donald Trump put Rep. Ilhan Omar in danger because he tweeted criticism of her is absurd. And yet, it’s become a talking point for Democrats up to and including certain candidates who would like to replace Trump in the White House. Trump’s criticism of Omar’s remarks about the 9/11 attacks were perhaps a bit overblown. Our commander-in-chief is nothing if not prone to bombast and hyperbole.
MINOT, N.D. - Reading the headline, I’m sure some of you readers think I’m getting ahead of myself. After all, University of North Dakota President Mark Kennedy got a bit ahead of himself when he sent a goodbye letter to the campus community, touting himself as the sole finalist for a new gig at the University of Colorado.
MINOT, N.D. - North Dakota House Republicans have resurrected an idea to use Legacy Fund earnings as a way to reduce and eventually eliminate the state’s income tax. This is a unique idea among proposals for how to use the billions we’ve tucked away in that piggy bank in that it’s the only one which reduces the burden of government on North Dakota taxpayers.
MINOT, N.D. -- “Measles Count in US This Year Already More Than All of 2018” is a headline which popped up in my feeds this week. It was not an April Fool’s prank (a holiday feels a bit superfluous in the strange days of 2019).
MINOT, N.D. - “Delzer has been selling us this doom and gloom since the start in regards to the numbers,” one North Dakota Republican state lawmaker told me this week. The Delzer in question is Rep. Jeff Delzer, a Republican from Underwood and chairman of the powerful House Appropriations Committee which stands astride the Legislature’s budgeting process. The “numbers” in question are the state’s revenues.
MINOT, N.D. -- We’re going to end up doing something really, really dumb with the Legacy Fund. It was created by the North Dakota Legislature, with approval from the voters, back in 2010. As of February the fund had about $5 billion in it thanks to revenues from oil and gas development. Yet, at this point, there’s no defined purpose for what we’re actually going to do with all this cash.
MINOT, N.D. -- “Why did Wells Fargo fiance this pipeline when it was widely seen to be environmentally unstable?” That was a question Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, left wing media darling and ideological martinet, asked Wells Fargo CEO Tim Sloan during a recent hearing .
MINOT, N.D. -- Between the BuzzFeed catastrophe and the Covington Catholic High School mess , I’ve been thinking a lot about journalism these past few days.
MINOT, N.D. -- "No one can look at the data and say there’s no problem.” Those are the words of Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Scott Gottlieb, talking about national survey data showing “12 percent of high school students and 3 percent of middle school students” had vaped within the last 30 days.
