MINNEAPOLIS - A San Francisco man on the lam cost the Minnesota Vikings more than $70,000 in a scam involving luxury suite rentals, according to the Hennepin County attorney’s office. He also hosted pregame party in a downtown Minneapolis luxury apartment he lived in for a month, allegedly without paying rent. Daniel Escamilla, 39, who is wanted in multiple states for financial fraud, was charged with three counts of theft by swindle and one count of theft by false representation, Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman’s office said Wednesday. Escamilla’s whereabouts are unknown.
BLOOMINGTON, Minn. — People upset over the attack on a 5-year-old boy at the Mall of America last week have offered support for his family to the tune of over a half-million dollars raised since Saturday, April 13. Authorities said Saturday that the boy who was thrown from a Mall of America third-floor balcony Friday is fighting for his life. A GoFundMe page has been set up by Noah Hanneman, who says he is a friend of the family. Hanneman identified the boy as “Landen” and described him as “the sweetest kindest five-year-old you will ever meet.”
ST. PAUL — St. Paul police officers will now be able to offer up a plush stuffed puppy, bear or bumblebee to children they come across on their beat thanks to a St. Paul Boy Scout. When Elliot Helmer set out to complete the project, as part of his efforts to become an Eagle Scout, the 17-year-old didn’t have a set number of animals he hoped to collect, and he was pleasantly surprised by the results.
Kelly Catlin, the Arden Hills native who helped the U.S. women’s pursuit team win the silver medal at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, died Friday at her home in California. She was 23. Catlin’s father, Mark Catlin, told the bicycle racing magazine VeloNews that his daughter killed herself. Catlin, her sister Christine and brother Colin were triplets.
BLAINE, Minn. - A Blaine man charged with fatally shooting his estranged wife on Friday called police and then told officers who arrived, “I can’t believe I did it” and “I guess I don’t have to worry about a divorce now,” according to a criminal complaint filed Monday. Matthew Lynn Jansen, 46, was charged with second-degree murder and held on $1 million bail. According to the complaint by the Anoka County attorney’s office:
MAPLE GROVE, Minn. - A manager of a McDonald’s in this northern Twin Cities suburb has been charged with sexually assaulting one of his employees, a 14-year-old girl, according to Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman. Andrew Otero Albertorio, 24, was charged with five counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct with a victim 13-15 years old by a person in a position of authority. Albertorio was scheduled to make his first court appearance later Tuesday.
ROSEVILLE, Minn. — Roseville police are investigating a double fatal pedestrian crash on Thursday night, Jan. 3. The incident happened at Larpenteur Avenue and Woodbridge Street, just west of Rice Street near St. Paul.

MINNEAPOLIS — Body camera footage from the Thurmin Blevins shooting released Sunday night, July 29, on the Minneapolis Police Department's website appears to show Blevins had a gun in his hand when he was shot dead in a North Minneapolis neighborhood earlier this summer. In the video, officers repeatedly order Blevins to drop the gun and warn him that they are going to shoot before they fire. When he falls to the ground in an alley, what appears to be a handgun drops to the pavement beside him before police reach him.
ST. PAUL — St. Paul Mayor Melvin Carter has asked David Martinez to immediately drop out of the city council race after the Ward 4 candidate's recent behavior made headlines and stirred controversy. In a span of three days earlier this month, Martinez was accused of domestic abuse, ejected and banned from Target Field and arrested and banned from St. Paul public libraries. And on Saturday, it appears Martinez posted a topless photo of his estranged wife on his campaign website in response to being served a restraining order.
