Beginning March 1, the aggregate walleye-sauger limit on Lake of the Woods will be reduced from eight to six, with no more than four walleyes allowed, same as summer regulations. As part of the September fall gillnet survey on Lake of the Woods, fisheries crews set four, 250-foot nets at each of 16 sites on the Minnesota side of the lake from the south shore to the Northwest Angle, leaving the nets in overnight and checking them the next day. Joe Stauss of East Grand Forks caught and released this 29-inch walleye Friday, Oct. 12 on the Rainy River. "One of the biggest and nicest 29-inch walleyes I have ever seen," said Jeff Novak of Grand Forks, who netted the fish and submitted the photo. Stauss caught the fish on a jig and a minnow. Bryan Mason of Grand Forks caught this 31½- inch walleye Friday, Aug. 31, on Lake of the Woods. “I’ve been fishing for 39 years, and today was the day!” Mason said of his “PB” -- personal best -- walleye, which hit a 3/8-ounce pink-white-hammered gold jig tipped with a frozen shiner. He kept the fish for mounting.
