Knights coach Welsh says: “The start of the season has 35 GFC wrestlers working hard and preparing for a successful season. We are excited to have a handful of young ladies on the team as we work to grow the sport for girls. With over 25 wrestlers with ample experience, we should have a solid line-up. We look for our returning place winners to move up the podium and for a few new wrestlers to make their way onto the podium. With our level of experience, we also hope to challenge for a top four spot in the region duals and individual tournament standings. We’d like to make it back to the state dual tournament after a one-year hiatus.”

GF Red River

Coach: James Covington

2019-20: 4-15, ninth at East Region tournament, 19th at state individual tournament.

Key graduation losses: Micaiah Peterson, Zion Diggs.

Returning region/state placers: Jr. Troy Stenehjem (19-22, fifth in region), sr. Camden Larsen (15-24, fifth in region).

Other returning regulars: Soph. Max McCarthy (9-21).

Roughriders coach Covington says: “We have a very young team and a mixture of experience throughout the projected line-up. We have a group of kids that are coachable and willing to learn. They ask questions on different positions, and I love being able to break things down. Part of coaching is being able to explain things so that it is easy to grasp onto.”

I’ve been around the RRHS program for 10-12 years coaching. Whether that be in a volunteer or assistant coach capacity. With the wrestlers returning this year there is a familiarity with myself and the way that I coach. I’m a very animated and hands on coach that expects each and every wrestler to be ‘perfect.’ When I say perfect I don't mean no mistakes and winning every match. Because the reality of that happening is difficult. When I say perfect, I mean, I want kids to be willing to put the work in to become 1% better every day. To attempt take downs, to take educated risks in matches. You learn from losses as much if not more than you do with victories.

When it comes to duals this year we will be at a disadvantage just because of the way our lineup matches up. We typically were top heavy in our lineup. This year we have a plethora of light weights. Dual wins aren’t a particular goal of mine this year. I am more focused on the individual and helping them attain their personal goals.

“I would be dismissive to not say that becoming the head coach of the (RRHS) program has been a goal of mine for some time now. Being an assistant coach for the last six years kept me involved with the program. But the itch was always present to one day be the head guy but the timing never seemed to work in my personal schedule. Finding that work/life/social balance was something that I had to figure out. But good things come to those who wait. The opportunity presented itself this year and I could not pass it up.”

“With this being 2020 and the year of race relations, I need to say that becoming the first Black head coach in any sport in Grand Forks means a lot. I want to be able to give back to a sport that has molded me into the person I am today.”
