SIOUX CITY, Iowa - Mayville State recorded women’s basketball history at the school on Thursday by beating Cornerstone (Mich.) 86-82 in the first round of the NAIA Division II national tournament.

The Comets rallied from a 20-point deficit to win its first national tournament game. The win advances Mayville to today’s round of 16. The Comets will play College of the Ozarks of Missouri at noon today.

Marcisa McMillan led the Comets with 26 points and 17 rebounds, her fourth double-double. McMillan has scored at least 20 points in four of her last five games and has tallied double-digit rebounds in four straight.

Sabrina Rude added 21, Liza Hoglo 14 and Hailey Longtin 12 for Mayville, which shot 56 percent in the second half.

Cornerstone opened a 24-4 lead in the first seven minutes of the game. But the Comets rallied and tied the game at 48-48 with 14:18 left in the contest.

Mayville took the lead for good a little over a minute later when Rude connected on one of her game-high six 3-pointers to make it 54-52.

Cornerstone cut the deficit to as close as three points. However, Mayville held off the attack with timely free throw shooting.
