The hair of hockey players from Hermantown - make that "Hairmantown" - was featured on ESPN on Tuesday night.
Barry Melrose - the former NHLer and current hockey analyst with the unmistakable mullet - was in St. Paul in March for the high school boys hockey tournament. The story from his four days at Xcel Energy Center aired during Tuesday’s E:60 episode on ESPN, including the segment on the Hawks.
Outrageous hair has become synonymous with the state tournament. There is no shortage of quirky looks, including steps, blonde dye and business-in-the-front-party-in-the-back mullets.
“Hockey players have always been good looking, these virile young men with long hair, but the tournament has gone the extra mile,” Melrose told the Minneapolis Star Tribune. “The hair is unbelievable.”

After Hermantown won the Class A state title, Melrose chatted up Hawks coach Bruce Plante. The Hawks, which had finished as runners-up the previous six state tournaments, also had an ESPN crew following it around at times during the second half of the season.
“We adopted Hermantown because they’ve been to the tournament seven times and (finally) won,” Melrose said.
