In the first high school volleyball meeting between Grand Forks Red River and Grand Forks Central, the Roughriders were without all-state hitter Alex Page. Standout teammate Kaylee Lancaster was also injured in the first set and didn't return.
The Knights pushed the Roughriders to five sets in Red River's victory back in early September.
Page and Lancaster were back in the lineup Tuesday night in the Central gym, and it showed.
Page had a team-high 14 kills and Lancaster added 10 as Red River rolled to a 25-16, 25-11, 25-9 sweep of the Knights.
"We've definitely worked really hard since then and got our whole lineup back," Red River coach Heather Chatham said of the difference in the two rivalry meetings. "We're really jelling together. This tournament this past weekend helped us working as a unit."
The Riders improved to 9-3, while the Knights dropped to 3-8.
Central hung with Red River through the middle portion of the first set, coming as close as 13-12 and then later 18-16 before the Riders pulled away. The Riders slowly pulled away in the second set and then jumped out to a 7-1 lead and never looked back in the third and final set.
"We really did well with mixing up our plays and running it across the net, not just stacking one side and that keeps blockers guessing a second longer and opens up the court," Chatham said. "We weren't finding those holes at first but we did at the end of the first game and moving into the second."
Red River was helped by 26 assists and seven digs from senior setter Ashlee Welch and 17 digs from senior libero-setter Ella Fosse.
Central was paced by Sofi McGee's six kills and Paige Carlson's four digs and eight assists.
"I think we came in battling pretty hard but for whatever reason in Games 2 and 3, they warmed up and we didn't capitalize on our chances," Central coach Kari Hearn said. "They're a good, strong team. They don't give us very many opportunities."
