MANKATO, Minn. -- UND failed to capitalize on a chance to escape last place in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association.
Minnesota State-Mankato downed UND 3-2 on Friday night. The loss dropped the Sioux to 6-19-2 in the WCHA, while Mankato improved to 5-17-5. UND enters tonight's regular-season finale against Mankato with 14 points in the WCHA. Mankato, with its win against the Sioux, enters the finale with 18 points.
Early in the first, Minnesota State jumped out to an early 1-0 lead with a goal from senior Kala Buganski, who received a cross-net pass from sophomore winger Lisa Edman from the left circle. Buganski beat UND goalie Jorid Dagfinrud top-shelf glove side.
MSU senior forward Christina Lee put the Mavericks up 2-0 at the 14:34 mark of the second when she converted on a breakaway and beat Dagfinrud with a backhand shot stick side.
Late in the second UND winger Sara Dagenais beat MSU's goalie Alli Altmann high, glove side to make it a 2-1 game. Kelly Lewis assisted on the UND goal.

Jackie Otto scored Mankato's third goal in the third period. UND's Margot Miller tallied an empty-net goal with 18 seconds left for the Sioux.
The Mavericks outshot the Sioux, 34-21. Altmann finished with 19 saves while Dagfinrud recorded 31 saves.
