Brad Berry was a standout defenseman at UND before becoming the program's head coach.

It appears he's pretty good at recruiting that position, too.

UND landed a verbal commitment this weekend from Jake Sanderson, a 2002-born defenseman from Calgary and the latest touted defenseman to join the future roster.

Sanderson visited campus during UND's two-game series against Omaha and made his commitment there, according to his Instagram account.

Sanderson is the son of longtime NHL winger Geoff Sanderson, who played 1,104 games for the Hartford Whalers, Carolina Hurricanes, Buffalo Sabres, Vancouver Canucks, Columbus Blue Jackets, Phoenix Coyotes, Philadelphia Flyers and Edmonton Oilers.

Sanderson is already 6 feet tall and is a left-handed shot.

With a late-summer birthday, Sanderson is only in ninth grade. He plays for Edge School in Alberta.

Sanderson was a fourth round draft pick in the Western Hockey League Bantam Draft, but has remained eligible to play college hockey.

His commitment continues UND's recent roll in landing top-rated blue liners.

UND has two defenseman commits eligible for the 2018 NHL Draft-and both are currently projected to go in the top 60.

Jonny Tychonick plays for the Penticton Vees in the British Columbia Hockey League, while Jacob Bernard Docker plays for the Okotoks Oilers in the Alberta Junior Hockey League. Tychonick could sneak into the first round. Bernard Docker is expected to go in the second.

In 2019, Moorhead's Ethan Frisch will be draft eligible. In 2020, Sanderson, Penticton's Luke Reid and Fargo's Tyler Kleven will be draft eligible.

UND currently has no senior defensemen on the roster, but the Ottawa Senators will likely push to sign junior defenseman Christian Wolanin.

Wolanin and Hayden Shaw are juniors, defensemen Colton Poolman, Andrew Peski and Casey Johnson are sophomores and Gabe Bast, Matt Kiersted and Josh Rieger are freshmen.
