The NHL opened a new season Wednesday night with some new faces behind new benches.
Former UND captain and head coach Dave Hakstol, who was the head coach of the Philadelphia Flyers last season, is now an assistant coach with the Toronto Maple Leafs under Mike Babcock.
Former UND forward Dave Tippett, who was most recently a head coach with the Arizona Coyotes in 2016-17, made his debut as the head coach of the Edmonton Oilers.
Both were successful.
Hakstol and the Maple Leafs beat the Ottawa Senators 5-3, while Tippett and the Oilers earned a 3-2 win over the Vancouver Canucks.

The Maple Leafs used two goals by former No. 1 overall pick Auston Matthews, who Hakstol once tried to recruit to Grand Forks, to beat the Senators in Toronto.
The Oilers received a game-winning goal from Connor McDavid in the third period to get Tippett his first win with Edmonton.
Boeser, Oshie grab assists
Former UND forwards Brock Boeser of the Vancouver Canucks and T.J. Oshie of the Washington Capitals grabbed their first points of the season.
Boeser assisted on an Alex Edler second-period goal in a 3-2 loss to Edmonton.
Oshie, who played prep hockey at Warroad, assisted on Washington's overtime winner, scored by Jakub Vrana in a matchup between the last two Stanley Cup champions -- the Capitals and the St. Louis Blues. St. Louis raised its Stanley Cup banner before the game..
