KALAMAZOO, Mich. — Western Michigan forward Jack Perbix scored with 8:13 to go in the third period to give the Broncos a 2-2 tie with UND in the opening game of their two-game set in Lawson Ice Arena. UND got the extra point in the shootout.

Herald three stars

First star: Owen McLaughlin, UND, assist, shootout winner.
Second star: Cameron Rowe, WMU, 34 saves.
Third star: Drew DeRidder, UND, 26 saves.

First period

WMU 1, UND 0 — Jamie Rome (Aidan Fulp, Tim Washe) 19:58. UND ices the puck with 4.8 seconds left in the first period and it comes back to haunt the Fighting Hawks. Washe wins a draw, Fulp gets it to Rome and the fifth-year senior sneaks it just inside the post with 1.2 seconds left in the period.

Second period

WMU 1, UND 1 — Judd Caulfield (Owen McLaughlin, Tyler Kleven) 5:18 (pp). Caulfield continues to thrive against the Broncos with his eighth-career goal against Western. On this one, McLaughlin does most of the work. After an excellent zone entry by McLaughlin, he threads a pass to Caulfield, who is standing on top of the crease. Caulfield tips it past Western Michigan goalie Cameron Rowe.

UND 2, WMU 1 — Louis Jamernik V (Jackson Blake) 14:15. Blake gets dumped off the puck, but Gavin Hain wins a board battle to free it back up. Blake takes it on a two-on-one, dips around Western defender Carter Berger and flips a backhand feed to Jamernik on the backdoor. Jamernik finishes it for his second goal of the season.

Third period

WMU 2, UND 2 — Jack Perbix (Dylan Wendt) 11:47 (dp). Wendt holds in a Tyler Kleven clearing attempt at the blue line and makes a nifty feed to Perbix in space. Perbix snipes the corner of the net on a delayed penalty to tie it up.

No scoring.
