GRAND FORKS — Matteo Costantini scored in overtime to lift UND to a 4-3 exhibition win over the U.S. Under-18 Team on Saturday afternoon in Ralph Engelstad Arena.

Herald three stars

First star: Matteo Costantini, game-winning goal, assist.
Second star: Gabe Perreault, USA, 2 goals, 1 assist.
Third star: Will Smith, USA, 1 goal, 2 assists.

First period

UND 1, USA 0 — Jake Schmaltz (Matteo Costantini, Judd Caulfield) 1:15. UND gets on the board early as Costantini tracks down a puck behind the net and centers to Schmaltz, who puts it over USA goalie Michael Chambre.

UND 2, USA 0 — Riese Gaber (Owen McLaughlin, Chris Jandric) 3:53. The Fighting Hawks quickly add to the lead with a couple of cross-ice passes. McLaughlin, in the right circle, hits Gaber in the left circle. Gaber's initial shot is stopped by Chambre, but Gaber goes top shelf with the rebound.

UND 2, USA 1 — Gabe Perreault (Will Smith, Ryan Leonard) 9:53. Leonard enters the zone on the right side and leaves a drop pass for Smith. UND loses coverage on Perreault on the left side. Smith makes the feed and Perreault finishes it.

UND 2, USA 2 — Will Smith (Gabe Perreault, Ryan Leonard) 11:33. USA quickly ties it up with another goal from the top line. UND defenseman Brent Johnson turns the puck over then gets turned around with a quick passing play and Smith has a tap-in from the top of the crease.

Second period

UND 3, USA 2 — Cooper Moore (Owen McLaughlin) 14:05. McLaughlin makes a terrific defensive play, breaking up a USA rush with a backcheck, then takes the puck the other way on an odd-man rush, hits the trailer, Moore, and the defenseman snipes one.

UND 3, USA 3 — Gabe Perreault (Will Smith, Ryan Leonard) 18:01. Smith has the puck below the goal line and spots Perreault wide open in the circle. He makes the feed and Perreaul snipes it to tie the game.

Third period

No scoring.

UND 4, USA 3 — Matteo Costantini (Louis Jamernik V, Ethan Frisch) 4:25. Frisch passes a puck to Jamernik at the blue line. Jamernik makes a nice touch pass to Costantini, who beats the USA defenseman wide and snaps a shot just inside the post to win it.
