GRAND FORKS — UND and Western Michigan are concluding their two-game series in Ralph Engelstad Arena. It's Senior Night for UND. The Fighting Hawks will honor Connor Ford, Zach Driscoll, Mark Senden and Gavin Hain after the game. UND won the series opener 2-1.
Herald three stars
First star: Judd Caulfield, UND, 2 goals.
Second star: Louis Jamernik, UND, goal, assist.
Third star: Luke Bast, UND, goal.
UND 1, Western Michigan 0 — Luke Bast (Nick Portz, Cooper Moore) 2:34. UND gets on the board on its first power play of the night. Moore sends a point shot to the slot, where Portz attempts to tip it. The puck deflects to Bast in the right circle and Bast hammers it past Western Michigan goalie Brandon Bussi. It's Bast's first goal in The Ralph.
UND 2, Western Michigan 0 — Louis Jamernik (Dane Montgomery) 6:12. Jamernik enters the offensive zone one-on-two, splits the two defenders and gets in alone. He has back pressure and falls. Jamernik and defenseman Daniel Hilsendager dive after it and Hilsendager accidentally pokes it in his own net.
UND 3, Western Michigan 0 — Judd Caulfield (Connor Ford) 12:15 (pp). Western Michigan is pressing for a shorthanded goal and UND scores on a rush the other way. Caulfield rushes the puck up the right side on a two-on-one, dips around a diving defender and attempts to set up Ford on the back door. Western Michigan's Cole Gallant is charging back and accidentally puts it in his own net.
UND 3, Western Michigan 1 — Jason Polin (Tim Washe, Josh Passolt) 19:35 (pp). The Broncos convert on their first power-play chance of the game. Washe has the puck below the goal line and Cooper Moore is nearly able to poke it away, but Washe retains control and passes to Polin in the slot. Polin rifles a shot short side for his 14th goal of the season.
UND 4, Western Michigan 1 — Judd Caulfield (Louis Jamernik, Chris Jandric) 7:39 (sh). Jandric, along the halfwall, chips the puck out of the defensive zone on the penalty kill and sends Caulfield and Jamernik on a two-on-zero shorthanded rush. Caulfield gives it to Jamernik, who gives it right back to the Grand Forks native for his ninth goal of the season.
UND 4, Western Michigan 2 — Josh Passolt (Daniel Hilsendager) 8:21. Passolt brings the Broncos within two on a highlight-reel play. Passolt walks UND defenseman Brent Johnson, makes a deke on UND goalie Zach Driscoll and scores his eighth of the season.
UND 5, Western Michigan 2 — Carson Albrecht (Mark Senden, Griffin Ness) 13:42. UND has a two-on-one rush and executes it perfectly. Senden, coming up the left side, feeds Albrecht, who one-times it past Bussi for his first goal in Ralph Engelstad Arena.
