Herald three stars

* Nathan Smith, MSU, 1 goal, 3 assists.

** Lucas Sowder, MSU, 1 goal, 2 assists.

***Jackson Keane, UND, 1 goal, 1 assist.

First period

MSU 1, UND 0 -- Lucas Sowder (Nathan Smith, Walker Duher) 2:38. Duehr makes a terrific pass in the neutral zone to thread the puck behind Colton Poolman and to Smith, who has a two-on-one. Smith, the Winnipeg Jets draft pick playing his first-career game, makes a nice pass to Sowder, who catches Adam Scheel sliding from left to right. Sowder walks it across the crease and puts it in for an early goal.

MSU 1, UND 1 -- Westin Michaud (Shane Pinto, Gabe Bast) 19:38 (pp). The NCHC's leader in power-play goals a year ago gets on the board for UND late in the first. Pinto's shot from the left circle takes a long bounce off the end wall to Michaud, who is camped out in the right circle. Michaud hammers it just underneath the bar to tie it up.

Second period

UND 2, MSU 1 -- Harrison Blaisdell :16. Poolman makes a hit along the wall to force a turnover. The puck goes right to Blaisdell in the left circle. Blaisdell skates it into space, the fires a backhand hard past McKay from between the dots.

UND 3, MSU 1 -- Jackson Keane (Andrew Peski, Dixon Bowen) 2:44. UND strikes for another one early in the second on a beautiful passing play. Bowen sees Peski in space and makes a nice pass. Then, Peski spots Keane cutting backdoor, puts it on his tape and Keane makes the pretty finish.

UND 3, MSU 2 -- Edwin Hookenson (Lucas Sowder, Nathan Smith) 5:18. The Mavericks get one back on an unfortunate bounce for UND. Hookenson throws a harmless puck from the point toward the slot, where Tychonick accidentally re-directs it five-hole on Scheel.

UND 4, MSU 2 -- Dixon Bowen (Jackson Keane) 13:37. After a terrific shift by the Grant Mismash, Gavin Hain and Michaud line, UND's fourth line takes the ice and scores. Keane outbattles Andy Carroll for a puck behind the net and makes a nifty centering pass to Bowen, who buries it for his third of the year. That matches his goal total from last season.

UND 4, MSU 3 -- Nathan Smith 14:55. The freshman forward's first-career goal will be a memorable one. Smith walks the puck off the wall, skates between Blaisdell and Senden, finds space and rips one past Scheel's glove.

Third period

UND 4, MSU 4 -- Connor Mackey (Nathan Smith, Lucas Sowder) 6:15. Smith has a four-point night in his first college game, giving the puck to Mackey, who circles the zone and fires a bad-angle shot from just across the red line that beats Scheel on the short side.

Pregame comments

UND is playing without two injured players -- senior forward Zach Yon and redshirt freshman goalie Harrison Feeney, who dressed as the backup goalie in both of last weekend's games against Canisius and in the exhibition game against Manitoba. . . MSU-Mankato is back healthy with Nick Rivera and Nathan Smith in the lineup. The Mavs also have the big top line of Parker Tuomie, Marc Michaelis and Charlie Gerard together.
