Zach Yon was held without a point in the season opener.
Since then, the Roseau High School senior has piled up points in 21 straight games, breaking into the state’s top scoring leaders.
North Dakota took notice, offered a scholarship and Yon accepted on Wednesday morning, becoming the school’s latest recruit from the area.
“It just seemed like a great place to play,” said Yon, who made a visit in December when UND played against Northern Michigan. “I really liked the coaches and the way they run things there. It’s a great community and family to play with.”

Yon, a 5-foot-11, 185-pound forward who was named one of 10 Mr. Hockey finalists on Wednesday, has 29 goals and 59 points in 22 games, ranking second in Minnesota Class AA in points and third in goals.
UND was the only school that Yon visited. He also considered St. Cloud State. Yon’s date of arrival is still up in the air.
Yon’s father, Bill, played for rival Minnesota in the 1980s, but he has no qualms about Zach attending UND.
“I’ve gotten asked about that a lot,” Zach said. “That doesn’t bother him at all. He loves it just as much as I do. He’s happy.”
Roseau, 14-3-1 in its last 18 games, has its sights set on the postseason and trying to qualify for the state tournament out of Section 8AA.
“That’s been our goal for a while - ever since we’ve been peewees,” Yon said. “We’ve always gone to watch it.”
