The UND football program’s last player from Princeton, Minn., was linebacker Tanner Palmborg, who went from walk-on in 2015 to all-Big Sky Conference and team leader in 2017.

The Fighting Hawks went back to recruit Princeton for the 2022 recruiting class.

Haydn Stay, a 6-foot-4, 225-pound tight end, made his verbal commitment to UND recently to become the Hawks’ third verbal of the 2022 recruiting class.

Stay caught 17 passes for 315 yards and two touchdowns during his junior season. He also carried 12 times for 108 yards (9.0 yards per carry) for the 6-1 Tigers.

Princeton plays at the Class AAAA level in Minnesota in Section 6.

Growing up, Stay believed he was going to be a defensive player until college recruiters started to change his mind.

Stay said his commitment decision was going to come down to UND and North Dakota State. After UND offered a scholarship, Stay attended an elite camp at NDSU and wasn't offered a scholarship.

"The whole recruiting process was a lot and then COVID kind of screwed it all up," Stay said. "I'm glad I'm done with the decision, and I think I made the right choice."

UND offensive coordinator Danny Freund has said he wants to use his tight ends more in the passing game. In the spring of 2021, UND completed passes to two different tight ends -- freshman Adam Zavalney and senior Derek Paulson.

Zavalney had seven catches for 99 yards and three touchdowns, while Paulson had six catches for 53 yards. Paulson, known more for his run-blocking ability, elected to transfer after the season and has since committed to Miami of Ohio.

Stay is a multi-sport athlete at Princeton, as he was recently named the Mississippi 8 Conference Player of the Year in basketball.

The recruiting website 247sports has Stay ranked as the No. 18 recruit in the state of Minnesota.

The same site has UND verbal Jack Teicken, a defensive end from Moorhead, as the No. 16 prospect in Minnesota.

According to 247sports, UND is the only FCS school with two commits from the Top 20 in Minnesota.

All three UND verbals so far are from Minnesota. UND’s other verbal is from offensive lineman Brett Kelzenberg, a 6-foot-4, 270-pound Wayzata High School product.
