UND’s Colton Poolman is off to a fast start as is the rest of the UND men’s hockey team this season. The former East Grand Forks Senior High standout shares his thoughts on the season as UND prepares for this weekend’s series at Western Michigan.
Q. What have you thought of this first half of the season?
A. It’s been so much fun. It really is going pretty well right now. Obviously, we’ve got another half of the season to come through, but I’m so happy for the guys right now.

Q. There was a lot of green and white in the crowd in Minneapolis last weekend. What’s that like to come out and see that?
A. It’s like another home game. It’s Thanksgiving, so you think people might stay at home with their family and everything, but sure enough, they came out in flocks. It was so much fun to hear those Sioux chants going back and forth. It really made it a great atmosphere.
Q. Did the team do anything special for Thanksgiving?
A. We had our normal meal the night before. It wasn’t a Thanksgiving meal by any means. No turkey, no mashed potatoes, which is a bummer, but it was a pretty good meal nonetheless.
Q. Your father, Mark, played football here at UND. Did you ever consider going the football route instead?
A. Not really. I think I stopped playing in ninth grade or something like that. He kept urging me to go through high school, but I don’t think football was right for me.
Q. You’re a biology major, what would be your dream job in that field?
A. I don’t really know. It was kind of something I fell into. I do enjoy it, but it’s really open-ended. I haven’t thought about it too much.

Q. What’s been your hardest class so far?
A. One of the chemistry classes was a lot of work, oh my gosh. I don’t ever want to go through another one of those classes ever again.
Q. What is one part of your game day routine that you have to do?
A. Definitely nap. Take a nap about 2 p.m. Only about 20 minutes, but I feel super energetic afterwards. So, I need to have that.
Q. Who on the team has the strangest pregame routine?
A. I don’t know if it’s strange, but it’s so long: Jonny Tychonick. He gets here super early. It’s nothing weird, but he’s always doing something. He’s always buzzing around. It’s a little weird to me, but it works for him.
Q. What’s one food, if you had to eat every day for the rest of your life, you’d never get sick of?
A. Probably something with chocolate. I’ve got a sweet tooth.

Q. What’s one fact about yourself that most UND fans would be surprised to learn?
A. I think me and my roommates are movie nerds. We have a bunch of movie posters up in our living room. It’s college guys, so I guess it’s not a big deal, but we’re really big into movies, scripts and writers.
Q. What kind of movies?
A. Kind of a little of everything. Probably the dramas or action movies for sure, but we love talking about it and using movie quotes all day, so we’re just kind of nerds about it.
Q. Who do you live with?
A. Zach Yon, Cole Smith and Westin Michaud.
Q. How many movies do you think you guys have watched this season?
A. It seems like every Sunday, we’ll go through two or three at least. Weeknights, we’ll probably watch one per night or something like that. It’s not a bad deal.
