WATFORD CITY, N.D. -- The U.S. Forest Service is closing the four-mile Summit Trail in western North Dakota because of unsafe conditions that resulted from last summer's flooding.

The Summit Trail, located about 19 miles south of Watford City, connected the Summit Campground to the Maah Daah Hey Trail. Posts marking the trail will be removed this summer, but the trail from the campground to the overlook will remain open.

According to the Forest Service, the landscape has changed so drastically in places that the trail cannot be reconstructed in its original location. A new trail location may be considered in the future, but there are no plans to reconstruct the trail at this time, the Forest Service said. As required by the National Environmental Policy Act, any action on a new trail would include a public involvement process.
