SARASOTA, Fla. -- When Baltimore's Mark Reynolds took off from first in the second inning today, Minnesota Twins starter Carl Pavano turned and crouched so catcher Drew Butera could try to catch Reynolds stealing.
But Butera's throw never made it to second; it hit Pavano in the back of the left arm.
"That's the second time I've been hit by my catcher; the first time was in A ball, so that's 17 years apart, so that's not bad," Pavano said. "That one hit me right on the top of the hat, right where that pin is -- knocked it right off. Me getting hit in the head that early in my career probably explains a lot."
Pavano pitched three innings today, giving up an earned run on six hits and a walk while striking out two.
"I got plenty of work out of the stretch, which is good," he joked before adding, "Oh well, just another step in the process of getting that consistency up. I felt good at times, a little out of whack at times, but that's this time of year."
