GF Central head coach Jeff Welsh: “We wrestled very well today, capping off a good weekend. We took care of business against Turtle Mountain, survived a very game Mandan team and pushed Bismarck Legacy to the final match. Going 2-1 today and 3-2 on the weekend is one of the better finishes we’ve had in recent years at the Metro Duals. Facing the tough competition from the west will help prepare us for the state tournament.”
NOTE: GF Central is 2-3 in the N.D. East Region Conference and 8-14 overall.

Grand Forks head coach Brent Newman: “‘Let’s go have some fun,’ were the words uttered by one of our athletes to their teammates following today’s national anthem. It was a great sentiment to hear to start out our day and I think for the most part everyone followed through on that. I know it was fun to watch these guys work through their events with effort and conviction. Today’s meet proved to be a lot quicker than expected with some teams unable to compete due to weather and illness, but this also contributed to today being a great learning experience for everyone, especially the new guys. Competing at a high level back-to-back like they were expected to yesterday and today definitely adds to the learning curve of this sport and the training the guys are expected to put in. On top of that, today was another opportunity for everybody to put their training into practice with improved technique and form. It was a successful day by all accounts though many of the guys experienced a personal let down here or there especially related to their finish times. It is important for these guys to understand that the clock isn’t the end all, be all. We need to get better and more efficient. The time drops will come from that. Today was a good learning experience to get that point across. We had a good number of swims that were improved through form and technique that didn’t necessarily shatter the PR board. That will come down the road as they establish these better habits. We get the opportunity to attack the training pool Monday having learned from today’s experiences.”

Grand Forks head coach Brent Newman: “We entered today’s meet with a little trepidation because of the extra long bus ride due to the weather. The guys really surprised us with their extra enthusiasm and effort throughout the meet. It was very encouraging to see this group get their legs under them really early, shake off the lethargy, and swim consistently well across the board. We had a significant number of season and career best swims and earned our highest point total against Minot over the last 5 years. This exceptionally strong effort from the guys makes us excited to see what happens tomorrow after a good night’s rest. It will be a good test for the guys at this point in the season to have this caliber of back-to-back meets.”
