A look at the 2013 National Running Survey, conducted by RunningUSA, gives all kinds of insight into our sport.

The publication, released earlier this year, provides details on the profile, habits and preferences of runners across the country. It's an extensive survey, which breaks down gender statistics, motivations and even spending patterns.

"The profile of an average runner can differ significantly based upon experience in the sport, type of runner and current involvement, but the National Runner Survey captured a number of themes based on the responses of more than 30,000 core runners nationwide," according to a news release for the publication. "Runners in our survey state they were motivated to start running for exercise and continue to stay motivated for the purposes of staying in shape."

Other tendencies include running alone, early in the morning and with plenty of gear like a cell phone, GPS or watch and personal ID.

"They are technologically savvy and use their smartphones for GPS, music, social networking, running apps, and race results," the survey summarized. "Most are likely to participate in a 5K or half-marathon and these decisions are mostly based on the race location, event date, preferred distance, whether it sounds fun and the cost."

The results reflect "core runners," or those who train throughout the year. The survey said core runners participate in the sport an average of 208 days per year and log about 1,165 miles per year.

The primary motivation for those runners are staying in shape (77.3%), staying healthy (76.1%), relieving stress (61.9%) and having fun (61.7%).
