A national survey asking anglers to pick their top fishing destinations put south Florida at the top of the list. According to the survey by pollster AnglerSurvey.com, 43 percent of anglers surveyed cited South Florida as their top dream fishing trip destination.
That was followed by Costa Rica, 18 percent; Mexico, 12 percent; the Bahamas, slightly more than 12 percent; and Panama, 5 percent.
Nearly 12 percent of survey respondents said they had no preference, while 11 percent said they wouldn’t choose any of those destinations.
Making the write-in list were Minnesota, Texas, California, Alaska, Alabama and a handful of others.
South Florida earned its top ranking by virtue of its reputation for not only superb fishing, but ease and cost of getting there and angler impressions of feeling more secure than they would at Mexican or Central American destinations.

- DNR Commissioner Tom Landwehr will appoint Erika Rivers as director of the agency’s Parks and Trails Division when director Courtland Nelson retires in April. Rivers, 41, currently is an assistant commissioner and oversees three divisions: Parks and Trails, Fish and Wildlife, and Enforcement.
