Miami University associate athletic director Josh Fenton will be the new commissioner of the National College Hockey Conference, multiple sources have confirmed to the Herald.

Fenton will replace the league's first commissioner, Jim Scherr, who left to take a job with the European Games.

Fenton is the associate athletic director for business and finance at Miami University, which is located in Oxford, Ohio, and will be one of the NCHC's inaugural members when the league begins this fall.

Unlike Scherr, Fenton does have a hockey background. He served as a volunteer assistant coach and a director of hockey operations for Miami. He also had a short stint as the video coordinator for the San Jose Sharks.

When the job was initially opened a year and a half ago, Fenton was a finalist. Ultimately, it went to Scherr, the former head of the United States Olympic Committee. Scherr resigned to take the European Games job before the league ever played a game, though.

The NCHC will begin play this fall with eight members: UND, Miami, Western Michigan, Denver, Colorado College, Minnesota Duluth, Nebraska Omaha and St. Cloud State.

The league offices are located in Colorado Springs, Colo.
