Minnesota United to host Costa Rican club Saprissa in July friendly

ST. PAUL — Minnesota United will play host to an international friendly match against Deportivo Saprissa, a top club in Costa Rica, at 7 p.m. July 11 at TCF Bank Stadium, the club announced Friday, June 1.

“It’s exciting,” United Sporting Director Manny Lagos said in a statement. “It’s going to be a great matchup for everyone involved. We get to test ourselves against, historically, the biggest and most well-known club in Costa Rica. We are honored to be able to host Saprissa at our home stadium.”

Saprissa is the former club of Loons captain and center back Francisco Calvo, who is away with the Costa Rican national team in preparation for the World Cup, which begins in two weeks in Russia. Saprissa is also the current club of forward Johan Venegas, who is on year-long loan from Minnesota to the club based in the capital city of San Jose.

In recent years, United has hosted friendlies against Swansea City and Bournemouth of the English Premier League, Club Leon and Atlas of Mexico’s Liga MX.
