- Resident hunters must possess a General Game and Habitat license and a Fishing, Hunting and Furbearer Certificate. In addition, all hunters age 16 and older must have a Small Game License and Federal Duck Stamp.

- Nonresidents must purchase a Nonresident Waterfowl License, including the General Game and Habitat License, and Certificate.

- All migratory bird hunters are reminded to register with the Harvest Information Program before hunting. Hunters who purchase a license through the state Game and Fish Department website (gf.nd.gov) or instant licensing telephone number -- (800) 406-6409 -- can easily get HIP certified.

Season dates and limits

- Light geese: Opens Sept. 25 residents and Oct. 2 nonresidents; closes Dec. 31. Limit 20 daily, no possession limit. Shooting hours half-hour before sunrise to 1 p.m. Sept. 25-Nov. 6; half-hour before sunrise to 2 p.m. Nov. 7 through end of season; extended shooting hours half-hour before sunrise to sunset on Saturdays and Wednesdays from Sept. 25-Nov. 28 and Saturdays, Sundays and Wednesdays from Dec. 1 through end of season.

- Canada geese: Opens Sept. 25 residents and Oct. 2 nonresidents; closes Dec. 23 except for Missouri River Zone, which closes Dec. 31. Limit three daily, six in possession. Shooting hours same as for light geese.

- Ducks: Opens Sept. 25 residents and Oct. 2 nonresidents; closes Dec. 5. High Plains Unit opens Sept. 25 residents and Oct. 2 nonresidents; closes Dec. 5; reopens Dec. 11 and closes Jan. 2. Limit six daily, 12 in possession; five mallards of which only two may be hens, three wood ducks, two scaup, two redheads, two pintails, one canvasback. Daily limit of five mergansers may include no more than two hooded mergansers; possession limit on restricted ducks and the hooded merganser is twice the daily limit.
