Again this summer, the Department of Natural Resources will open the Roseau River Wildlife Management Area's main access road to motor vehicles for several days.
The WMA is located in Roseau County near the Manitoba border in northwestern Minnesota.
According to Randy Prachar, manager of the Roseau River WMA, the "dike road," as it's commonly known, will be open for nine days beginning July 17 and then Saturdays and Sundays through Aug. 22.
The road, which spans 29 miles from east to west, connects the eastern end of the refuge in Roseau County with the western side near the Kittson County line. The road offers visitors the opportunity to fish northern pike along any of the refuge's three managed pools and to view a variety of waterfowl, shorebirds and other wildlife species.
The dike road is closed to motor vehicle traffic most of the year, but with nesting season now complete, Prachar said there's no reason not to allow temporary access. The DNR also opened the dike road to vehicles for a couple of weeks last summer and received a lot of good comments for doing so, he said.

"We want people to get out and see this area and enjoy it some," Prachar said. "It's the public's WMA and we'd like to get their support for it."
The Roseau River WMA and the dike road are located about 20 miles northwest of Roseau, Minn., along Roseau County Road 3. For more information, contact WMA headquarters at (218) 463-1130.
