Luther Aadland, a research scientist for the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources and an expert in river restoration, will give a presentation at noon Friday in Leonard Hall Room 100 at UND.
Aadland's work includes designing the rock-riffle structures that have replaced low-head dams along the Red River in Fargo-Moorhead, Grand Forks and East Grand Forks and several tributaries in the Red River Basin. The rock-riffle design features a more gradual slope than low-head dams, eliminating the roller currents that are so dangerous to humans and accommodating fish passage.
Aadland also authored a new book, "Reconnecting Rivers: Natural Channel Design in Dam Removals and Fish Passage," that is the culmination of more than 20 years of work and research into the subject.
During Friday's presentation, which is open to the public, Aadland will offer a broader look at river restorations and how rivers are barometers of overall cultural health.
