On the surface, at least, "Get Paid to Fish," a new e-book from veteran fishing tournament organizers Jim Kalkofen and Bernie Barringer, might seem to have a limited audience.
But at the same time, anyone who enjoys wetting a line likely has entertained the notion that fishing for a living sure would be fun.
It's not that simple, though, the authors say. More than catching fish, earning a living as an angler depends on catching-and keeping-sponsors to fund the passion and keep it afloat.
In "Get Paid to Fish-How to Catch and Keep Sponsors," Kalkofen and Barringer-both fishing tournament pioneers-share their experiences. Barringer built a small grassroots tournament circuit into the Grand National Walleye Cup, and Kalkofen was longtime director of the Professional Walleye Trail and has an extensive marketing background in the tackle and marine industries.
About a dozen professional bass, crappie and walleye anglers contributed to the book, as did industry marketing professionals. Al Lindner and bass tournament pro Kevin VanDam each wrote forwards to the book, explaining the value to the sponsorship-seeking angler.

"This book is a must read for anyone wanting to make a living in the fishing business," Lindner said in a news release. "That includes guides, tournament anglers, manufacturer's reps, the outdoor media, tackle and marine companies, retailers and everybody associated with the great sport of fishing."
VanDam agrees. "This life can be yours. It is attainable," he says. "But, behind the scenes, 99 percent of the public doesn't know what it takes. With hard work and knowing the rules of the road that are in this book, they will understand some of the next steps necessary for success."
