Loons to host Everton in midseason friendly at Allianz Field

MNUFC will face off against the club manager Adrian Heath starred at as a player.

Adrian Heath will have his allegiances tested one day this summer when the beloved English club of his playing days, Everton, faces the American outfit he’s dedicated six years to as manager of Minnesota United.

The Loons will face the Toffees in an international friendly against Everton at 7 p.m. July 20 at Allianz Field, the clubs announced Tuesday.

Heath said he wasn’t involved “at all” in setting up the game, but is delighted its on the schedule when Everton comes to the U.S. for a preseason tour. Everton will play fellow English club Arsenal in Baltimore on July 16 before coming to Minnesota.

“I’m their biggest fan,” Heath said of Everton on Tuesday. “It changed my life going there a long, long time ago. I’m really excited that they are coming.”

As an an attacking midfielder, Heath made 308 total appearances and scored 94 goals for Everton from 1982 to 1988. He was the club’s record signing for 700,000 English pounds in 1982 and was inducted as an Everton “Giant” in 2018

The Loons will fit this exhibition in between two MLS matches across eight days: at home versus D.C. United on July 16 and at Houston on July 23. MNUFC also play an exhibition match this summer against SC Paderborn 07 of the German second division at 7 p.m. June 11 at Allianz Field.

Everton, which has never been relegated since the Premier League became England’s top flight in 1992, has won title nine times, but this season is one point above the relegation zone with four games remaining.

MNUFC has hosted nine international friendlies since 2013: Swansea City (2014); Club Leon (2015); Club Leon, Bournemouth (2016); Atlas (2017); Saprissa (2018); Herta Berlin, Aston Villa, Pachuca (2019).
