Girls tennis: West Fargo Sheyenne, Fargo North players claim East Region individual championships

Sheyenne's Mimi Gu and North's Erika Spanjer and Elaina Latunski win singles and doubles titles in the region championships Saturday.

FARGO — Defending state champion Mimi Gu of West Fargo Sheyenne and the Fargo North doubles team of Erika Spanjer and Elaina Latunski won titles at the East Region Championships on Saturday.

Gu defeated Fargo Davies' Paige McCormick 6-0, 6-3 in the singles championship match.

Spanjer and Latunski downed Grand Forks Red River's Claire Huebner and Madeleine Sandberg 6-3, 6-2 for the doubles crown.

Both Gu and McCormick had to defeat teammates to reach the singles title match. Gu won 6-0, 6-0 over Sheyenne's Alyssa Sommerfeld in the semifinals while McCormick posted a 6-4, 6-4 semis win over Davies' teammate Marissa Burian.

In the doubles semifinals, both finalists had to put in extra effort for a chance to play for the championship.

The Davies team of Lily Andrews and India Rohl took the first set against Spanjer and Latunski before the North duo prevailed 2-6, 6-4, 6-2. Huebner and Sandberg dropped the second set before rebounding for a 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 win.

In consolation singles matches, Sheyenne's Sarea Gu won the fifth-place match 6-1, 6-1 over West Fargo's Reet Goyal and Valley City's Kailee Nielson was a 6-2, 6-7 (4-7), 6-0 winner over Fargo Shanley's Mary Wolf in the seventh-place match. All players earned state tournament spots.

In consolation doubles matches, Shanley's team of Madeline Abbott and Julia Wolf defeated Grand Forks Central's Madison Stauss and Magdalene Spicer 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 for fifth place. Valley City's Breck Sufficool and Olivia Ingstad won 6-0, 6-0 over Grand Forks Red River's Farrah Spicer and Addison Lommen. All four teams earned state tournament spots.

The state team championships begin at 10 a.m., June 2, in Grand Forks.
