GRAND FORKS — It hasn’t been the best season to prepare for outdoor track and field, with flooding, howling winds and rain putting a damper on practice time throughout this spring. Despite the conditions, Grand Forks Central’s Carter Elde and Grand Forks Red River’s Logan Arason amassed quality efforts throughout the year and both were able to win multiple events on the big stage during Saturday’s East Region Meet at Cushman Field.

At the start of the season, both squads imagined a comfortable outdoor practice schedule at the location of Saturday’s meet but were offered time at the UND High Performance Center up to their first meet of the year.

“As the season progresses, you definitely get a feel for that tightening up in that last meter and you are able to push through,” Elde said following his 110m hurdle victory.

Before the 110m, Elde took first place in the 300m hurdle—his best race this season—and the 400m dash.

The senior's performance earned him Outstanding Senior Athlete honors and gave Central 30 points to their team total. His 30 individual points were more than Wahpeton, Shanley, Devils Lake, Valley City and Horace earned in the entire meet.

The Knights were able to earn 73.5 points and fifth place honors with his effort. West Fargo Sheyenne finished first on the boys side, while Fargo Davies won the girls meet.

“I feel like we have just worked a lot this season on threshold training. Just pushing through when it hurts. I feel that is my biggest strength,” said Elde.

The 400m dash was the hardest-fought victory for Elde. With Fargo South’s Austin and Justin Zulu bearing down on the finish line, he was able to withstand the tightness in the last 50 meters and push out ahead.

“I didn’t want to get beat. I pushed through it and I think that helps a lot in the 400m is having that strength that gets added on from running those hurdles,” he said.

While on the topic of strength, Red River's Arason was able to confidently pull in two field victories. He easily sealed the discus throw with a 160-foot toss and squeaked out the javelin by a fourth of an inch, with a 164-05 distance that finished just ahead of Wahpeton’s Ethan Manock’s 164-1 throw.

Looking back at the prep for this season, Arason has been at even more of a disadvantage. He is a tall and built athlete that takes up a lot of space with his booming throws. Being stricken to indoor practices to start the year was a challenge for him.

“It’s been a year to focus on technique. I mean, you can’t throw a javelin indoors, so focusing on the small things that make a bigger difference is been the mentality,” he said after his final throw of the day.

There have been some positives in Arason’s development thanks to the meticulous indoor work. He has been able to slow down his approach and look at the big picture when it comes to throwing.

“It’s helped with my consistency. The past few years I haven’t been as consistent and this year I have been. It’s helped me with the smaller things that keep me in the range that I want to be in,” said Arason.

Arason also participated in the shot put, and while still a little uncomfortable for him, he was able to finish fourth and secure five points for the Roughriders, who would go on to finish third with 106.

Arason originally was not going to throw shot put this year over injury concerns, but in the end, he has enjoyed his development as a glider.

“I thought about quitting because it put a little bit of stress on my elbow, but I was convinced to come back as a glider instead of a spinner. I really like it, it’s been fun,” he said.

Supportive Schillers

Red River’s Tanner Schiller hit the tail end of the 3,200 relay hard, vying for a team record for the second straight year. Schiller; along with Dameon Zenawick, Hunter McHenry and Jonah Dafoe, were able to eclipse that record with a 7:55.41 heat, but were edged out of a first-place finish by a strong push from West Fargo.

Then Schiller’s sister, Jocelyn, led off the girl's heat, rocketing out of the gates.

“(His race) was a really exciting race, they all ran really well,” she said. “It got us very excited and kind of set the table for us.”

In a poor season in regards to weather, the team of Schiller, Mya Mannausau, Campbell Dorsey and Morgan Hartze were able to string together consistent times and earn the first seed heading into this meet. On Saturday, light drops of rain here and there along with cold temperatures made for less than ideal conditions.

“It’s so cold,” Hartze exclaimed immediately after crossing the finish line.

While that girl’s relay was the only team event the Roughriders would capture, Jocelyn would go on to win the 800m dash in front of her brother.

“We’re really supportive of each other,” Tanner said. “I finally encouraged her to come out for cross country, we’ve been supporting each other like that for a while. I really enjoy watching her.”

Not only has Tanner been able to watch her this year, they also competed together in a relay earlier this month at the Howard Wood Dakota Relays. They placed third in the 1,600m Co-ed relay.

Both Jocelyn’s wins earned her a spot on the All-EDC team and a dates at the state meet next weekend in Bismarck.
