Prep football: Riders pull past Spartans

FARGO -- Grand Forks Red River broke open a close game with two fourth-quarter touchdowns here Friday en route to a 27-13 high school football win against Fargo North.

FARGO -- Grand Forks Red River broke open a close game with two fourth-quarter touchdowns here Friday en route to a 27-13 high school football win against Fargo North.

Red River led 14-6 entering the final quarter. But an A.J. Johnstone 4-yard touchdown run and a 30-yard scoring pass from Sam King to Elby Pope increased the lead to 27-7.

King's 9-yard run and a Chris Waind extra-point kick gave Red River a 7-0 lead in the first quarter. Taylor Bosch hooked up with Adam Amundson for a 9-yard score to pull the Spartans within 7-6 after one quarter, and it stayed that way until Adam Cook returned a fumble 37 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter. Waind's kick made it 14-6.

North also scored late in the game on a 41-yard pass from Bosch to Cody Strom.

Red River improved to 3-1 in the East Region and 6-2 overall. North dropped to 1-3 and 1-7.
