JAMESTOWN, N.D. -- The season started in a big way for the Grand Forks Red River and Grand Forks Central boys.
The Roughriders and Knights finished first and second at the Orr-iginals Invitational, the season-opening meet. Red River finished with 81 and Central with 94. Third-place West Fargo had 115.
Red River juniors Tanner Piper and Matt Tingum finished second and third individually with times of 17:09 and 17:10. Fargo Davies' Branden Scheel won the individual portion with a time of 16:52.
Central's top runners were Tom Fischer (10th, 17:39) and Cameron Roehl (11th, 17:41).
"The boys really ran well as a team," Red River coach Richard Dafoe said. "They got to see the hard work from the summer pay off a bit."

On the girls side, Central finished sixth with 248. Red River finished 14th with 375. Fargo Davies won the girls meet with 24, placing runners first, second, third and sixth. The top Grand Forks runner was Grace Roehl, who took 28th with 17:38.
"The girls came away from the meet motivated," Dafoe said.
