Jones and Dietrich advance to state tournament
FARGO - Chessa Jones and Emma Dietrich of East Grand Forks Senior High defeated Karly Fyle and Sydney Holt of Pequot Lakes 6-7(8-10), 7-5, 6-3 to win the Minnesota Section 8A doubles championship Saturday and earn a trip to the state tournament.
“We knew today would bring tough matches,” said Senior High coach Kyle Hanson. “They had a great, gutsy effort today and had a fantastic finish. I am so proud of these girls.”

Jones and Dietrich defeated Nikki Edin and Grace Wolhowe of Staples-Motley 6-2, 5-7, 6-1 in the semifinals.
The Minnesota State Class A tennis tournament is scheduled for Oct. 21-24 in Minneapolis.
Boys basketball
Sterkel named Eagles coach
Destry Sterkel has been named boys head basketball coach at Sacred Heart High School.
Sterkel is a graduate of Dickinson State University, where he played basketball for the Blue Hawks. He graduated with a degree in composite social science with a criminal justice focus.

Ljunggren shines at Davies Invite
FARGO - Grand Forks Red River and Grand Forks Central competed in the Fargo Davies Invitational on Saturday.
Lexi Ljunggren of Central was a double winner. She won 200 freestyle with a time of 1 minute, 57.61 seconds. Ljunggren also won the 500 freestyle in a time of 5:14.93.
Also getting a first was Central diver Madi Remer.
The Roughriders tied for fifth, scoring 162 points. The Knights were seventh at 161.
West Fargo won the meet with 387 points.

Volleyball
Riders place second at Fargo Invite
FARGO - Grand Forks Red River went 3-1 and earned second place in the gold tournament at the Fargo Invitational on Saturday.
The Roughriders defeated Sioux Falls Washington, Fargo South, and Jamestown, but lost to Fargo Shanley in the title match.
“We moved our offense around, so we had a variety of hitters we used in different matches,” said Red River coach Carolyn Olson. “It was a strong day for us and we were all pleased with our effort.”
Red River will not play again until Oct. 21 when the Riders meet Grand Forks Central.
Knights split at Fargo Invite
FARGO - Grand Forks Central won two matches and lost two at the Fargo Invitational on Saturday.

The Knights defeated Minot and Dickinson, but lost to West Fargo Sheyenne and Devils Lake.
“We started off well and played pretty solid against Minot,” said Central coach Nate Martell. “It was rough in the middle of the day with losses to Sheyenne and Devils Lake, but finished the day off well against Dickinson. It was an up and down day.”
Central travels to Devils Lake on Tuesday.
