Organizers of the Cats Incredible Catfish Tournament on the Red River in East Grand Forks have decided to cancel this year’s event because of COVID-19 concerns.
The East Grand Forks Association of Firefighters Local 3423, which organizes the tournament, announced the cancellation Thursday morning, May 28. Cats Incredible was scheduled for July 25-26, with headquarters at LaFave Park in East Grand Forks.
“The memberships feel that for the protection of not only participants, staff and volunteers, but most importantly for the protection of the community of East Grand Forks, we feel that is the right thing to do in these uncertain times,” Paul Hansen, president of Local 3423, said in a statement on behalf of the firefighters union. The tournament will be back “better than ever in 2021,” organizers said.
Cats Incredible was open to 125 two-person teams. Anyone who had signed up for this year’s tournament will receive a full refund in the coming days, organizers said.
Another local tournament, the Scheels Boundary Battle Catfish Tournament, will proceed as scheduled Saturday, June 27, and Sunday, June 28, but with some format changes mandated by Minnesota and North Dakota to minimize COVID-19 risks. Limited to 50 two-person teams, the Boundary Battle tournament is sold out.
