Veteran walleye pro Mike Gofron of Antioch, Ill., is in first place after day one of the Cabela’s/Bass Pro Shops National Walleye Tour Championship on Devils Lake.
The tournament got underway Wednesday morning, Sept. 11, and wraps up Friday, Sept. 13. Grahams Island State Park is tournament headquarters.
Gofron weighed in five walleyes for 28.22 pounds to lead the tournament field. Matt Schiefelbein of Marseilles, Ill., Gofron’s partner for the day, leads the amateur co-angler division, also with 28.22 pounds. Teams could weigh five walleyes.
Rounding out the top five pros as of 5 p.m. Wednesday -- finishes aren't official and subject to change -- were:
Second: Curt Hanson, Mayville, N.D., five walleyes, 25.56 pounds.
Third: Dusty Minke, Walker, Minn., five walleyes, 25.07 pounds.
Fourth: Sheldon Meidinger, Bismarck, five walleyes, 24.21 pounds.
Fifth: Gene Merck, Bismarck, five walleyes, 23.73 pounds.
Among other pro competitors with area connections, Brett Kenner of Devils Lake is in 35th place with 13.62 pounds; Zachary Axtman of Rugby, N.D., is in 39th place with 12.31 pounds; Johnnie Candle of Devils Lake is in 60th place with 7.56 pounds; Mike Olson of Thompson, N.D., is in 70th place with 4.99 pounds; and Brian Bjorkman of Fargo is in 81st place with 2.06 pounds.
Dylan Nussbaum of St. Mary's, Pa., who won a qualifying NWT event last year on Devils Lake, is in 52nd place with 9.44 pounds.
The NWT championship continues at 7 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 12, with weigh-in beginning at 3 p.m. at Grahams Island State Park. The top 10 pros and top 10 co-anglers after Thursday will take the water Friday, Sept. 13, to vie for the championship.
