Zac Bernier can check “catching a big lake sturgeon” off his fishing bucket list.

Bernier, of Grand Forks, and a couple of buddies decided to hit the Rainy River for a few hours Friday, May 10, before the Minnesota walleye opener, and he ended up catching a 54½-inch sturgeon, his biggest to date.

One of his buddies fought a sturgeon for about 15 minutes before Bernier hooked into his.

“They are strong,” he said. “Even with heavy gear, they are tough to bring in. It definitely takes a lot out of you, but that makes catching it that much better. It was a lot of fun because you never know how big they could be.”

Using the GoPro camera he got last summer, Bernier and his buddies were able to capture the battle and the resulting celebration on video. Here’s a video he shared. Sturgeon battles tend to be time-consuming, so the video is edited for length.
