The new Willie Walleye statue in Baudette, Minn., has been in place more than a month, and a dedication event is set for Thursday, Aug. 23, the Northern Light newspaper reported on its Facebook page.
Constructed by a Wisconsin company, the new fiberglass model of Willie Walleye replaces a 60-year-old concrete version of the 40-foot, 2½-ton icon that was showing severe wear and tear. The new statue, which will hold up better to the elements, was set into place July 9 and has been popular among both locals and visitors, said Joe Henry, executive director of Lake of the Woods Tourism.
The statue is the centerpiece of Willie Walleye Park, situated along state Highway 11 in Baudette.
"For days after they put it up, there were people nonstop-carloads of people," Henry said. "It's up, it's rocking."
