Photos and smiles tell the stories of youth deer hunters who enjoy successful seasons
Another deer season is in the books for all but the most diehard archery hunters in North Dakota, where season is open through Jan. 7, and Minnesota, where bow season closes Dec. 31.
What remains are photos, venison in the freezer and perhaps even some bragging rights for the fortunate, while those who didn't bag that buck or doe are left to dine on "tag soup" and relish the memories of their time in the field.
Today, though, photos are the focus.
Whether it's successful fishing trips or successful hunting excursions, the Herald receives more photo submissions than it can run in print on the Sunday outdoors pages.
Photos are posted to the online Trophy Room gallery on the Herald's website, but not everyone is in the habit of checking out the Trophy Room. Photos online can't be clipped out and posted on the fridge or elsewhere like those that run in print. Sure, they can be printed out and displayed that way, but for many readers, it's just not the same.
We try to print hunting and fishing photographs—especially kids' photos—when space permits, and we've printed a handful of photos of young hunters who experienced successful deer hunts this fall.
Still, we haven't printed as many as we'd like.
With that in mind, here are some—though not all—of the youth deer hunting photos that didn't make it into print this fall.
