N.D. state track: Hook, Anderson win titles

BISMARCK -- Griggs County Central senior Kali Hook won the girls Class B shot put title here Friday in the opening day of the North Dakota high school track meet.

BISMARCK -- Griggs County Central senior Kali Hook won the girls Class B shot put title here Friday in the opening day of the North Dakota high school track meet.

Also winning a title from the area was Benson County's Alyssa Anderson in the B girls 1,600.

Hook had a winning throw of 41 feet 4 1/2 inches as she won the event for the second consecutive season. Hook surpassed 40 feet on all six of her attempts.

Anderson ran a personal-best time of 5 minutes, 10.37 seconds in the 1,600. She moved up one spot after being runner-up in the event in 2009. Anderson is defending state champion in the 3,200.

Anderson also ran a leg on Benson County's winning 4x800 relay, teaming with Sara Schwanke, Erin Leier and Katelyn Engh for the win.

Benson County leads the team race heading into today's final competition with 38 points. Velva/Drake-Anamoose is second with 22. Griggs County Central is third at 18.

Two area athletes had runner-up finishes Friday -- Cavalier's Taylor Brown in girls high jump and Hillsboro's Garrett Burg in boys javelin.

The boys team race is close. Parshall leads after Day 1 with 21 points, followed by Lisbon (19), Dickinson Trinity (18) and Rugby (16).
