Fewer deer licenses
The North Dakota Game and Fish Department is lowering the number of deer hunting licenses available this year by about 5,000 from last year's record 149,400.
The Game and Fish Department has been working in recent years to reduce deer numbers in the state, after a series of mild winters that boosted the population. But last winter was one of the worst in recent memory.
The hunting units taking a hit are mostly in eastern and central North Dakota. The southwestern part of the state will see an increase in licenses, along with a special doe hunting season in five units in early October.
Gov. John Hoeven must still approve the license numbers.

Deployment briefings
The North Dakota National Guard is holding briefings for family members of soldiers being deployed later this year on a peacekeeping mission to Kosovo.
The weekend briefings will give family members information about the mission, and about support services they can tap into.
The meetings are in Bismarck, Fargo, Grand Forks and Valley City.
More than 700 Guard soldiers will mobilize in August for the mission. It will be the state's largest single deployment since Vietnam.
