N.D. East Region baseball tournament: Riders, Devils Lake advance

WEST FARGO -- Grand Forks Red River scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to beat Fargo Shanley 4-3 on Thursday in the opening round of the East Region baseball tournament.

The win advances Red River into tonight's winners' bracket game against Devils Lake. The winner advances to the state tournament.

Matt Lee led Red River with two runs.

Ryne Anderson went the distance to pick up the win for Red River.

Fargo North 5, GF Central 3: Justis Garrett and Kirk Schroeder drove in two runs each as Fargo North edged Grand Forks Central in its first-round game.

Schroeder knocked in two runs with a seventh-inning double to give the Spartans a 5-2 lead.

"We probably hit the ball better than they did," Central coach Mike McNamara said. "They scored two run on a couple of 9-irons down the right-field line."

Brady Johnson took the loss for the Knights, who will play Wahpeton in a loser-out game today at 11 a.m.

"Brady pitched a solid game for us," McNamara said.

Nick Moe and Gabe Salquist each had two hits for Central.

"The balls we hit, they made plays on," McNamara said. "They made three or four diving plays in the outfield."

Devils Lake 2, West Fargo 1: Cole Boehmer drove in two runs in the third inning as Devils Lake edged West Fargo in a first-round game.

Jason Swenseth and Matt Senger each scored for Devils Lake.

Austin Dillard drove in Kolby Schmidt for West Fargo's only run.

Fargo South 7, Wahpeton 0: South starting pitcher Seth Hochstatter shut down Wahpeton's offense to lead the top-seeded Bruins past the Huskies in the opening round.

Hochstatter allowed only one hit while striking out eight batters over seven innings.

Jared Quinlan sparked the Bruins offense with a solo home run.
