MINOT -- Grand Forks Central's impressive comeback came up a few plays short.

Minot, which led 27-10 at halftime, hung on late for a 45-37 high school football victory over the Knights on Friday.

"We fought and clawed our way back," Central coach Bill Lorenz said. "It was back and forth in that fourth quarter. Minot just made one more play."

The Knights took a 37-33 lead with 9 minutes, 19 seconds left on Grant Parks' 3-yard touchdown run.

Parks finished the game with 188 yards on 31 carries.

"We ran the ball really well," Lorenz said. "Grant Parks had a big game for us again. We had a good solid push up front, as well. We were just two teams running the ball at each other. It was a knock-down drag-out fight."

Donte Smart, Minot's speedy running back, was too much for the Knights. Smart finished with 204 yards rushing on 24 carries.

Smart scored three times on runs of 6, 8 and 51 yards.

After Parks gave the Knights the lead in the fourth quarter, the Magicians answered with touchdown runs from Jonas Tengesdal (62 yards) and Max Murphy (37 yards).

"They were running a little misdirection," Lorenz said. "They have a good back in that Smart kid. They caught us on that misdirection coming the other way."

Minot finished with 420 yards rushing. After Smart's 204 yards, Tengesdal ended with 104 and Murphy had 62.

The Knights were able to get back in the game quickly in the third quarter. Central scored three touchdowns within eight minutes.

First, Taylor LaHaise returned a fumble 18 yards for a score with 11:10 left in the third quarter. Then after another fumble recovery, Parks had a 4-yard touchdown run with 8:59 left in the third. Central then took a 30-27 lead when Brady Johnson scored on a 3-yard run with 3:49 left in the third.
