Minnesota state wrestling tournament: Novacek triumphs

ST. PAUL -- Greenbush-Middle River-Badger coach Todd Bergeron expected a close score in the 103-pound championship match of the Minnesota Class A state wrestling tournament.

ST. PAUL -- Greenbush-Middle River-Badger coach Todd Bergeron expected a close score in the 103-pound championship match of the Minnesota Class A state wrestling tournament.

Isaac Novacek, however, had other ideas.

Novacek, a GMRB sophomore, downed Gus McCarthy of Border West 16-4 in the 103 final Saturday to win his first state title.

"I anticipated a close match but Isaac pretty much dominated," Bergeron said. "It was a no-doubter. Isaac got a takedown right away. He was more physical and kept on scoring."

Novacek, who finished the season 38-1, was the only area wrestler to earn a state title Saturday.

GMRB had one other wrestler in the finals. However, Dustin Caspers of BOLD beat GMRB's Alex Yeager at 285 pounds 3-2. Yeager also is a sophomore.

"Alex lost a heartbreaker," Bergeron said. "It was a good match. The kid (Caspers) was more physical than I thought he'd be. Alex got a reversal and got on top, but didn't get the two count."

Novacek becomes GMRB's 13th state champion. It was another good meet for GMRB.

"I knew we had the capabilities for a good meet," Bergeron said. "It was a matter of getting the right draws and the kids being able to go out there and perform. Our guys were ready. The state tournament didn't intimidate them."

Crookston's Mariano Portillo also reached the finals in the Class A tournament.

But Curt Maas of Medford downed Portillo 4-2.

Portillo finished the season 34-1.

One other area Class A wrestler capped his season with a win.

Caleb Lanoue of Mahnomen-Waubun pinned Jake Schermerhorn of Frazee in 5 minutes, 38 seconds to capture third place.

GMRB's Skylar Price finished fourth, falling 13-2 to Minneota's Beau Buysse.

Crookston's Anthony Caputo also finished fourth, falling 8-5 to Medford's Kole Kavitz in the third-place match.

In the Class AA meet, Kyle LeDuc of Thief River Falls lost to Tommy Glenn of Simley in the 135-pound title match.

Glenn beat LeDuc 6-1. The loss was the first of the season for LeDuc, who finished 45-1.

Jacoby Bergeron of Thief River Falls finished fifth with a 6-4 overtime win against Mitch Dunlap of Foley.

In the team competition, Thief River Falls -- the Section 8AA champion, dropped both of its matches. The Prowlers fell to Foley 53-18 in the first round and to Adrian 34-28 in the consolation semifinals.
