The UND basketball team lost an outside shooting threat on Monday.
Freshman guard Adam McDermott was granted his release from UND and is pursuing other Division I opportunities.
"We granted Adam his release to pursue opportunities to transfer and continue his career closer to his home in Cedar Rapids," UND coach Brian Jones said in a statement.
The 6-foot-4, 185-pound Iowa native averaged 6.7 points and 2.3 rebounds per game for the Fighting Hawks. He played in 32 games, including one start, and shot 40 percent from the 3-point line (56-for-137).
The long-range specialist is the nephew of former UND men's basketball assistant coach Greg McDermott, who is currently the head coach at Creighton in Omaha.

In high school, Adam led Cedar Rapids Xavier with 18 points per game and a school-record 18 wins. Xavier finished third at the Iowa Class AAA state tournament, earning McDermott first-team all-state honors.
McDermott's best game at UND came at home against Idaho State. He was 8-for-14 from 3-point range and finished with 28 points. He ended the year with five games in double-figures scoring.
UND finished last season 17-16 and ended the year with an 89-86 home loss to UC Irvine in the CollegeInsider.com Tournament opener.
Against Irvine, McDermott had nine points in 27 minutes and fouled out.
