Beaudoin leads Sioux

DEKALB, Ill. -- UND's Chivas Beaudoin carded her best round of the 2011-12 season, shooting a team-leading 81 during Monday's final round of the Northern Illinois Huskie Classic at the Kishwaukee Country Club.

Beaudoin's 81 was the lowest by a Sioux golfer during the tournament and helped secure a 20th-place tie for the junior. She shot an 87 during the opening round to finish the event with a 168.

UND tied with Creighton for seventh place in the team standings, shooting 341 on Monday and 681 for the tournament.

SIU-Edwardsville took first place with a 646 (328-318), an 11-shot edge over runner-up Loyola.

UND freshman Amanda Fairweather, who was the team's best performer during the opening round with an 82, finished one stroke behind Beaudoin with a 169 (82-87).

Fairweather finished tied for 23rd place

The Sioux are now idle for two weeks before wrapping up the fall season Oct. 31-Nov. 1 at the Alabama-Birmingham Fall Blast.

MEN'S GOLF

UND's Mathew in sixth

MANHATTAN, Kan. -- UND freshman Samuel Mathew is in sixth place to lead the Sioux on Monday at Kansas State's Jim Colbert Invitational and is among the clubhouse leaders after the opening day.

Mathew shot an opening-round 72, then followed with a 74 in the second round to end with a two-over 146. Just two shots separate Mathew from second place heading into Tuesday's final round.

The Sioux are in fifth place in the team standings with a 605 (302-303), seven shots ahead of sixth-place Northern Colorado.

First-place Idaho shot a 582 and leads second-place Boise State by six shots. BSU's Taeksoo Kim is the leader with a five-under 139 (72-67) and was the only golfer in the field of 47 to break par.

- Boxing: The Forks Fighters Gym will open for season and practice will start Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. Practices will be held in the basement of the Big Sioux Truck Stop. The first matches of the season are scheduled Nov. 12. For more information contact Eddie at 701-772-5405 or 701-317-0334.

- College soccer: Minnesota-Crookston's Amanda Stapleton is the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference defensive player of the week. Stapleton, a goalie, led the Golden Eagles to two league wins, 1-0 against Northern State and 2-0 against Mary. Stapleton has a goals against average of 1.84 and a saves percentage of .802.

- Prep volleyball: Sarah Durand recorded 12 kills, Erin Sundby added 21 assists and Ariana Porter had 32 digs as Warren-Alvarado-Oslo beat visiting East Grand Forks Sacred Heart on Monday. Brittany Hammond and Abby Schumacher each had four kills to pace Sacred Heart.

- Girls tennis: East Grand Forks Senior High's Jessamy Jones won both of her matches Monday at No. 1 singles, but the Green Wave fell to Park Rapids 6-1 and Thief River Falls 5-2 in Park Rapids, Minn. "We came out flat against Park, and could not close any close matches against Thief," Senior High coach Jim Wyatt said. "We definitely have to get some things straightened out and don't have much time with section play starting next week."
