Grand Forks Red River used two Jonah Kratochvil goals in the third period to overcome a 2-1 deficit to beat Minot on Saturday at Purpur Arena.

“Our forwards were so clean and handled the puck so well today,” said Roughriders coach Bill Chase. “They just made nice plays when they needed to. Our defense was solid, holding them to just six shots in the last two periods.”

Jordan Lunski scored the other Red River goal.

The Roughriders improved to 11-7-1 and will visit West Fargo on Thursday.

Warroad 1

WARROAD, Minn. - Dixon Bowen scored two goals and assisted on two others to lead No. 2-ranked East Grand Forks Senior High to a victory over No. 3 Warroad on Saturday.

“I thought we played a solid road game from start to finish,” said Senior High coach Tyler Palmiscno. “We did a good job of creating offense off of the cycle. We were fortunate to have a couple breaks go our way. Josh Weber was solid for us … He made some big saves in the first period when we needed him to.”

Weber finished with 17 saves.

The Green Wave also received goals from Grant Loven, Jace Pesch and Eddie Eades.

Senior High will play Bemidji on Monday.

Warroad 36

East Grand Forks Senior High, playing for the third consecutive day, pulled away in the second half to beat visiting Warroad on Saturday afternoon.

“It was a good win coming off the road,” said Green Wave coach Emily Ruemmele, whose team won at Bemidji on Friday night. "We got back at midnight. I’m tired. I’m sure the girls have to be tired. We’re satisfied with this win.”

Ellen Potter had 16 points - one less than her season high that she reached Friday - to pace Senior High. Kelsey Schlenk added 10 points. Lindsay Fast scored 11 and Molly McDonald 10 to pace the Warriors.

Briefly

n Boys swimming: Fargo North won Saturday’s Fargo Davies Invitational. The Spartans finished with 553 points. Grand Forks was fifth with 267 points. The KnightRiders’ 400 freestyle team finished third.

n Boys basketball: There are 13 players listed on the Hawley boys basketball team’s roster. Nearly one-third of those players quit Friday. Two junior starters – forward Jordan Harms and guard Dawson Tusow – and  reserve guards Chad Clute and Ben Steichen all left the team Friday. “Don’t mean to let any of you down, but I had enough of being pushed around,” Steichen wrote on Twitter on Friday. Hawley coach Jed Carlson would not comment on the situation Saturday, although he did acknowledge those four players had quit the team. “I think it’s a test for the remaining guys,” Carlson said after Hawley’s 63-51 win over Crookston on Saturday. “There’s tough choices out there, but I’m very proud of the locker room.”

FARGO - North Dakota State shot 67 percent from the field in the second half to down Denver on Saturday in a Summit League game.

NDSU improved to 2-5 in the league and 6-16 overall.

Brooke LeMar led all scorers in the game, scoring a career-high 33 points on 12-for-19 shooting while dishing out eight assists.

NDSU trailed 51-45 after Denver’s Desiree Hunter converted a layup with 13:37 remaining in the second half before Kahla Becken drilled a jumper 13 seconds later to cut the Denver lead to four, 51-47.

Becken's jumper ignited the Bison offense as NDSU went on a 12-5 run the next 3:26 that saw Marena Whittle give NDSU its first lead of the game, 57-56, with 10:38 to go after she made a layup, was fouled and converted the bonus free throw.

Denver tied the game twice more in the second stanza before a Becken three with 7:44 remaining gave the Bison the lead for good.

Men’s basketball

Denver 67, NDSU 63

DENVER - Junior Lawrence Alexander scored 20 points, including 18 in the second half, but North Dakota State came up short at Denver on Saturday.

 NDSU (16-6, 5-2 Summit League) never held a lead in the game, but the Bison trimmed a 13-point deficit to one at 64-63 when Alexander hit a pair of free throws with 30 seconds remaining in the game.

 After Denver’s Chris Udofia connected for one free throw to make the score 65-63, NDSU was unable to capitalize on a pair of chances to tie the game. Alexander saw a layup rim out with 18 seconds left, and, after the rebound went out of bounds and stayed in NDSU’s possession, senior Mike Felt missed a long two-point jumper with seven seconds remaining.

Marcus Byrd made two free throws to seal the victory for the Pioneers.

Denver (11-11, 4-3 Summit) was led by 19 points from guard Brett Olson. Udofia chipped in 16 points, six rebounds and four assists.

n Swimming: The UND men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams beat South Dakota State on Saturday. The men won 170.5-129.5 while the women took a 158-142 win. UND’s Noah Lucas set a pool record in the 200 freestyle as did Adam Gannon in the 100 freestyle. UND’s 200 medley relay team and the 200 freestyle relay team also established pool records.

n Women’s track and field: UND sophomore sprinter Stephanie Clarke ran a Big Sky Conference Indoor Championship automatic qualifier in the 400 meters Saturday, highlighting North Dakota’s day at Iowa State's Bill Bergan Invitational in Ames, Iowa. Clarke ran a 400 time of 56.84 seconds, good enough for an eighth-place finish in the event. It was the fifth-fastest 400-meters in the Big Sky so far this season.

n Men’s track and field: North Dakota junior distance runner Nate Peterson established a personal record time in the mile run Saturday at Iowa State’s Bill Bergan Invitational. Peterson ran a time of 4 minutes, 11.97 seconds to eclipse his previous PR of 4:19.58 set last year at the same meet.
